CCR - Great way to spend 30min, but not very helpful

In my continued effort to keep up with all of the TV shows on air on the automotive customization front, Chop Cut Rebuild is next on my blogging radar.

CCR airs on Speed Channel and showcases many various projects from many various different shops mostly located in California.

I have to admit, the host seems well informed and is willing to get his hands dirty to help with the projects, you just have to get past some of the bad one liners. I don’t know much about his background or qualifications so there is some potential that he is just another TV host pretending to be a fully qualified mechanic.

As to the projects, it is pretty much focused on the extreme custom/show market. If you have a next to unlimited budget you could learn a lot of tips and vendor names to look at for your project.

Speaking from experience, the cars I have seen built on this show would cost a client in the $150,000+ area so keep that in mind when you are seeing all the easy “bolt-on” pretty parts.

Some examples include the use of custom built Curry rear ends, full custom TCI (Total Cost Invovled) suspensions, Wilwood breaks, aluminum drive shafts, etc, etc.

All that being said, if you have an extensive budget or you just want to drool on the TV, CCR is a fairly good show to watch.

My only complaint is that there is no real “how-to” aspect to the show. Perhaps that is because I am talking from a builder’s perspective rather than just a spectator.

So let me tackle it this way, to all the spectators out there:

  • These cars are NOT cheap to build
  • Average cost of a full restoration, show quality, vehicle is around $80,000 - $100,000 and beyond
  • NO these cars cannot be built in a week
  • A lesson from my project management career - cost, quality, and time are all totally dependent on each other
    • You want it done fast = more people/more money
    • You want radical custom = more time and more money
    • You want it to cost less = less custom and more time

So just a few things to keep in mind next time you’re watching the show and trying to sell the wife on a new project. :)

Cheers
