Vehicle Artwork - Do It Yourself
I don’t know if you’re like me, but as a child there were two things that led me into the custom car world.
The first was a natural ability when it came to art and enjoying the artistic side of hot rods and radical customs.
The second was my Father being an auto mechanic and building his own hot rods as a hobby, which in later years we started to make into a business.
Well we’ve all seen the shows and most of the larger shops have a graphic artist or sketch artist that does a mock-up version of a car before it is built. Chip Foose is famous for doing this on the Overhaulin’ show.
I’ve done this in the past for my car projects, but they have been mostly freehand with no specific education or coaching. As with most of my artwork, it was self-taught with room for much improvement in my mind.
The option to enroll in a graphics/arts school is not really an option. I have far too many things on the go to take time, or spend the huge budget, on that idea.
So, I started looking around at some of the teach yourself books on the market.
One I found the was recommended on a few forum sites as a book by Thom Taylor called “How to Draw Cars Like a Pro”. A quick search of Amazon and this book was only $4 CDN plus shipping used:

I’ve read the book cover to cover and I’m going to try it on my next drawing of the 1969 Dodge Super Bee project we are starting this fall. I’ll be sure to post my final drawing once I am done, but with my schedule, don’t hold your breath.
For the price, if you’re into learning how to draw cars, this is well worth the investment to start!
Cheers
